Welcome to our Run Club

Join us every Wednesday in helping keep our students active and engaged during recess.

Remember the famous movie quote, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy?” Just 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity such as running can boost your energy and mood, which can make it a great way to start your day feeling optimistic and charged and be ready to get back to learning.

At the end of last year, Our school analyzed the behavioral data.  What the data told us is that, during lunch recess on Wednesdays, we had the highest number of behavioral referrals throughout the school year. By offering a structured activity such as running, we are hoping to see the referral numbers reduce throughout the year.

Run club offers our students another option at recess that allows for positive interactions with students, all while getting great exercise.

Running has many benefits including:

  • Being a stressbuster
  • Combating symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Promoting productivity
  • Boosting your mood
  • Improving confidence
  • Getting the creative juices flowing
  • Sharpening your memory
  • Calming down the mind
  • Sleeping better at night

In our first week, 287 students participated!

During lunch recess, Ms. Dunn (our Counselor) and Mrs. Smutz (our Student Learning Specialist) take the participants to the middle school track.  They can run, or walk.  A run card is marked as they complete a lap (half the track = 1 lap).  At the end of recess, the cards are collected, and then the laps are recorded on a spreadsheet.

Having volunteers would make the transition from the school to the track and back a much smoother process.  More adults on the track helping count laps, and cheering kids on will give students more time to run.

Volunteer Instructions

Thank you for volunteering your time to our Explorer Run Club.

Volunteer duties:

  • Help transition students from the Skyline campus to the Lake Stevens Middle School track.
  • While standing on one end of the track, mark the running cards of students as they pass you.
  • Help transition students from the track back to the Skyline campus after the run.

We would love to have someone:

  • Take the run cards and upload laps into a spreadsheet.
  • Organize the cards by teacher and return them back to the school by the following Tuesday.
