Purpose for Our program

As a squad volunteer, you will provide a strong adult presence for our students while they are at lunch and on the playground. Our hope is to give kids positive experiences with other students and community members.

Squad Members Needed!

Are you looking for a way to help out at the school but don't really know where to start? Our Skyline Squad is the perfect way to start volunteering within our school. Our Squad is open to all adult family members of Skyline students. We are finding that we need extra eyes and ears out on the playground as well as in the lunchroom to help the day go smoother for the staff and students. Kids love seeing new faces on campus and they enjoy sharing their day with you.

Squad members can choose how often they volunteer at our school. Some volunteers come just one day a year, some join us once a month, while others volunteer their time weekly. It truly is up to you.

Tasks the volunteer is required to do

(volunteer background check must be cleared before arrival on campus)

  • Sign in at the office.
  • Read over and agree to the Squad information sheet.
  • Spend time out at recess and or in the lunchroom.
  • Foster group play and engage with students either in a group setting or individually as needed.
  • Be extra eyes and ears to help make sure students stay positive and safe while interacting amongst each other.

What do Squad members do while at school?

Typical Day as a member of the Squad:

- Arrive on campus at 9:45, or a couple minutes before. Stop and check-in to grab a vest, volunteer badge, schedule and any special instructions for the day. We would like you out on the playground at 10am.

- If you arrive before school starts, go out and say hi to a few hundred kids that are stoked to see you... Help make sure all kids make it inside, and to their classes, from buses and the covered area behind school.

- If you have coordinated with your child’s teacher, you have the opportunity to join a morning meeting in your student’s classroom before heading out to join kids at recess and lunch as well as be in the school ready to support our staff.

- At 10am, head out to the playground and engage with kids, making sure they’re enjoying their free time. You will be able to get in some good cardio, getting chased around in some fun games of tag. (Just don’t get caught!) See the list of activities the kids can enjoy while at recess.
Encourage (don’t force) kids hanging by themselves to play with others. Also, encourage (don’t force) kids to include everyone. (Keeping a sense that sometimes kids do want, and need time to themselves.) You can see changes in kids and their interactions, friendships being built and smiles that grow each time you return.

- After all recesses are complete at 2:15pm, you can head home, or if you have pre-arranged it with your child’s teacher, you may head to your student’s class and help, hangout, and or fill a need for their teacher. (Sometimes this even means making copies, grading papers or just sharpening extra pencils. But, every little bit helps!)

- If helping in the lunchroom, check in with the lunchroom paras and see how you can help. Typically you will walk around helping open food packets and making sure kids are being safe.

- When your shift is done, return the vest and volunteer badge and sign out with the office. The staff is excellent at getting the kids from class to the bus/pickup areas. However, if you would like to stay for student pick up, check with the office and see if they could use your help.

_____________________________________________________________________________

As a Skyline Squad member, you will provide a strong adult presence in the lives of kids while partnering in their education.

As Squad members, you are going to be joining our specialists in recognizing awesome behavior in our school wide locations: hallways, bathrooms, out at buses and line up in the morning would all be awesome. We have implemented some really important expectations for our students throughout the school that we need our volunteers to follow as well. The first and probably most challenging of those would be voice level zero hallways. It's important to remember that our work and goal is to provide the very best learning environment for students throughout our school. This is done with zero level voices, high levels of respect and an emphasis on being responsible, respectful and safe in order to be better together.

Take a stack of Exceptional Explorer tickets and share those with students all throughout the day that they see doing great things: we want to recognize EVERY student; those who are always amazing and awesome and meet expectations, those who may be challenged with boundaries but show growth and strong moments and those who may challenge us but are willing to work with us through hard days.

During the day, Squad members may read with kids, work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.Thank you for stepping into this rewarding role and helping us make Skyline a more Responsible, Respectful, Safe place to be.
